![]() That is why having the large pools in the hotel and swim up rooms is a perfect solution. The hotel tries very hard to clear the beach but it is a thankless task and if it is windy and a high tide it is nearby impossible. The only downside was sometimes the seaweed in the sea and on the beach did make it impossible to swim in the sea. We had a balcony sea view room but next time I would pay for a swim up room. The rooms were spacious and clean with a regularly stocked mini bar. The buffet breakfast and lunch was fresh and varied and I loved the smoothie bar at breakfast. ![]() The house wine was fine but you can upgrade for a fee although we felt the price did not merit the upgrade. The food was delicious and I loved the smaller portions so you could have a three course meal every night without feeling guilty. ![]() Most of the organised outside meals take place near the beach so you can still have a quiet meal at one of the four french, Italian, Japanese or Mexican restraurants at the main hotel. However the beauty of a place of this size is there is always somewhere quiet to chill out whether in a cabana on the beach or a nest hammock in the tropical garden. There was one day where a corporate group came to the property and I agree with other reviewers that it does change the atmosphere. There is a mixture of guests mainly American and Canadian and mostly couples of 30 years and over. Every member of staff I met could not have been more helpful. Their attitude is friendly, enthusatic and professional. Every inch of this property is maintained to perfection and the staff work incredibly hard whether to clean, serve, entertain or cook. There are two enormous swimming pools and the infinity pool being slightly cooler is rarely crowded so perfect for actual swimming. The gardens are a manicured extension of the jungle and you even see the odd critter and bird of paradise. Surrounded by tropical jungle at the end of a pristine white beach you feel secluded and private. We celebrated a significant birthday in March and after comparing the cost of a equivalent hotel in the Caribbean we choose Secrets Maroma for a 1/3 of the price. You won't lose with any of these choices, as the Secrets brand seems to be strong at all of their locations! More Show less If cost is a issue, Silversands seems to be cheaper, not sure why, it was just as nice. Akumal is much further from the airport so if you're going for a quick trip I would vote for Silversands or Maroma. Just keep in mind this property hosts a number of large corporate events, so that was annoying when large groups of people were on the beach drinking and talking loud when you're trying to rest. If you're going for the beach and want a larger hotel than Maroma is the way to go. All in all, the restaurants at all three were wonderful. The rooms at Akumal were brighter, but I actually liked the rooms at Silversands the best. I liked the layout of the hotel better at Akumal. They were great at Maroma, but didn't put forth the effort as did the Akumal staff. ![]() We found the staff at Akumal to be much more engaged, i.e. Basically the only extras you receive are access to a little lounge, who's staff is not entirely friendly btw, as well as daily access to the wet areas of the spa, which are amazing, but would have saved $ by paying daily for that. If your first experience is with Maroma you won't be disappointed, unless you opt for the Preferred level. All in all the hotel is wonderful, food, rooms and extras. After having stayed at Secrets Silversands and Akumal we decided to try Maroma based on Trip Advisor reviews. ![]() ![]()
